The Department of Age-Related Healthcare atÌýTUH is dedicated to enhancing the health, independence, and quality of life of older adults. Our team of specialists in medical gerontology provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary care tailored to the unique needs of aging patients.

We are proudly affiliated with the Department of Medical Gerontology in the School of Medicine, Trinity College Dublin, ensuring that our services are informed by the latest research, education, and clinical advancements in geriatric medicine.

Through a network of services across the Hospital, , and partners in Peamount Hospital, we deliver expert assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation to support older individuals in our community.

Medical Gerontology Teams

Located at Tallaght University Hospital (Main Campus) and , our medical gerontology teams provide inpatient and outpatient care for older patients with complex medical needs.

Age-Related Rehabilitation Unit

Located in Peamount Hospital, this unit specialises in rehabilitation for older adults recovering from illness, surgery, or functional decline.

This interdisciplinary service with neurology colleagues is based at Tallaght University Hospital (Main Campus), the Simms Building, and the Russell Building. This service offers expert assessment, diagnosis, and management of memory disorders, including dementia.

Specialist Falls Assessment Unit
Based at Tallaght University Hospital (Main Campus), this service evaluates and manages fall risk to improve mobility and prevent injury in older adults.

Specialist Orthogeriatric Service

Running at the Hospital's main campus, this service provides integrated care for older patients with fractures or musculoskeletal conditions, ensuring optimal recovery and rehabilitation.

Specialist Nursing Home Liaison Service
Based at Tallaght University Hospital (Main Campus), this service supports nursing home residents by coordinating hospital-based care, optimising treatment plans, and facilitating seamless transitions between care settings. We also provide clinical care to the long term care units in Peamount Hospital.

Integrated Care Services for Older Persons
This service facilitates the seamless integration of care between the acute hospital, general practitioners, and our HSE community partners. The team is based at Tallaght University Hospital (Main Campus) and the HSE Community Unit on Boot Road, Clondalkin, ensuring coordinated, patient-centred care for older adults transitioning between hospital and community settings.

Acute Geriatric Medicine
Based in the Hospital this service delivers expert acute gerontological assessment and care to older persons attending the Acute Medical Unit and Emergency Department.

Our Department is dedicated to delivering high-quality, person-centred care for older adults, ensuring they receive the best possible support for their health & wellbeing.

As part of our commitment to advancing geriatric medicine, we work closely with our clinical partners in Peamount Hospital and our academic partners in Trinity College Dublin’s Department of Medical Gerontology, contributing to education, research, and innovation in the field of aging and healthcare.

Charlie O'Toole Unit

Based on the main hospital campus the multi-disciplinary Charlie O’Toole Unit is where we manage most of our onsite ambulatory care, including our outpatient rehabilitation (Muscle Builders Group), our specialist Parkinson’s disease service, and some of our other specialist outpatient clinics.

Peamount HealthcareÌý

Peamount Healthcare is an independent voluntary organisation that delivers a diverse range of services, including Age-Related Rehabilitation for older adults following acute hospital admissions. This service is provided across two units comprising 45 beds (Cherryfields, and the Age-Related Rehabilitation Unit, or ARRU). Care is consultant-led, by geriatricians working between Peamount Healthcare and TUH, along with a large team of Health & Social Care Professionals (comprising Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech & Language Therapy, Medical Social Work, Dietetics, Psychology, Pharmacy and Nursing).

Peamount Healthcare also provides Long-Term (Nursing Home) Care to older adults across 50 beds in two units (Meadow View and Mountain View), also under the governance of a consultant geriatrician.ÌýAll patients undergo Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment to maximise their medical, psycho-social, and functional care needs.Ìý

Access to Peamount is usually directly following an acute hospital admission, most commonly in TUH or Naas General Hospital. Sometimes patients may be referred from an outpatient service in TUH for a two week admission for rehabilitation under the Community Rehabilitation Inpatient Specialist Programme (CRISP), led by an Advanced Nurse Practitioner.
