TUH reports a 12% reduction in its waiting list and says that 84% of all patients were waiting three months or less for surgery

Annual Report 2023(August 14th 2024)ÌýThere was a 12% reduction in waiting lists at Tallaght University Hospital (TUH) during 2023, according to figures in their 2023 annual report published today.ÌýThe report has also revealed that 84% of patients were waiting three months or less for surgery.ÌýThisÌýis a significant achievement considering the increased activity levels and demands on hospital services during 2023.Ìý

One of the best indicators of the growth in theÌýHospital'sÌýworkload canÌýbe seenÌýbyÌýlooking atÌýthe number of patients who attended the Emergency Department (ED) at TUHÌýduringÌý2023.ÌýForÌýthe first time last yearÌýoverÌý55,000 attended the ED.ÌýOnÌýaverageÌýit took 32 minutes for patients toÌýbe triagedÌýon arrivalÌýandÌýmost were seen by a doctor within four hours and 29 minutes.Ìý

This annual report is a special one for the Hospital as itÌýmarks an important milestone in theÌýlifetime of theÌýorganisationÌýâ€ the 25th anniversary of its opening. The document outlines the incredible effortsÌýthatÌýwereÌýputÌýinÌýby the TUH 25 CommitteeÌýwhoÌýsuccessfully organised a myriadÌýof celebrations that included their colleagues andÌýfamilies, patients and community. Their effortsÌýresulted in some incredible events during the yearÌýand have left the Hospital withÌýa richÌýrepository ofÌýmemories from our community andÌýstaff that will beÌýgreat remindersÌýinÌýthe future of our history.

LookingÌýaheadÌýTUH CEO Lucy Nugent said,Ìý“Our focus remains onÌýthe implementation ofÌýour strategy and expandingÌýour services as much as we can, given our footprint. Thanks toÌýthe workÌýundertaken by the Facilities Team,Ìýwe increased our onsite capacity for endoscopies. TheÌýadditional rooms willÌýsee an acceleration inÌýtheÌýreduction on this waiting list in 2024.ÌýIncredible efforts were made by teams across theÌýsystem toÌýreduceÌýwaiting times for outpatientÌýappointments, thisÌýhas resulted in a 12% reductionÌýin our waiting lists.ÌýThere is still more work toÌýbeÌýdoneÌýin this areaÌýbutÌýweÌýare hopefulÌýas moreÌýspaceÌýbecomes available in the Hospital asÌýpaediatricÌýservices moveÌýoutÌýwe will be able to expand theÌýnumber of clinics we can offer, further reducingÌýwaiting times for patients.â€

The Hospital performed over 10,000 surgeries last year with over 262,000 outpatient appointments. The annual report saysÌýwhile COVID-19Ìýitself had lessÌýof anÌýinfluence on admissions, the pandemic did cause an abnormal level of growth in all clinical departments. One possible explanationÌýfor this could be that patients delayed seeking treatment during the lockdowns.

For the vast majority of the yearÌýtheÌýHospital was at 100% occupancy.ÌýItÌýis acceptedÌýthat operating above 85% has a significant and material impact on patient flowÌýandÌýthis reinforcesÌýthe urgent need for additional beds.

There was also a significant increase in the number of patients over 75 presenting at theÌýHospital’sÌýEDÌýwhichÌýput added pressure on the system as these patients have more complex needs and often required admission to the Hospital.Ìý

Launching the annual report,ÌýThe Chair of the TUH Board, Trinity Professor Anne-MarieÌýBradyÌý°ù±ð´Ú±ô±ð³¦³Ù±ð»åÌý³Ù³ó²¹³Ù,Ìýâ€Activity levelsÌýcontinued to increase at the Hospital with a sharp increase in urgentÌýand emergency care. I appreciate the challengesÌýthis presents for patients and staffÌýasÌýthey try to find space for these patients to receive theirÌýtreatment andÌýatÌýthe sameÌýtimeÌýreduce the growthÌýin waiting lists for scheduled care. It is toÌýeveryone’sÌýcredit that despite the pressure from unplannedÌýactivityÌýthe inpatient waiting listsÌýonly grew by 56 in the year. Until the Hospital getsÌýadditional bed capacityÌýtheÌýabilityÌýto materiallyÌýimprove the inpatients waiting listsÌýwill be limited.â€

The ED saw a 37% rise increase in patients waiting to be admitted to a ward at 8am, although on a positive note, there was a notable improvement in trolley figures in the second quarter of the year.Ìý
